Use of animated video in teaching and learning

 There are various sources from which the students get information. Reading is one of the major source of obtaining information. Many students have difficulties in reading, for example when the students need to read a text, not all of them are able to find the correct information based on the text they have read. It is because, students find some unfamiliar words and teacher need to create some activity to enable them understand the new vocabulary. The current teaching and learning process is boring and students are easily deviated from the learning activity. 

With the development of science and technology, newer methods of teaching and learning has been proposed and been used. Use of internet and audio-visual tools has advantages over many other methods of teaching and learning. According to Sadiman, et al., (2008, p. 9) that the use of audio visual aids such as animated video functions as a medium conveys the message or the information in the study. The use of animated video is expected to improve students' motivation to read, understand the concept and then  improve their learning outcomes.

Animation

Animation is defined as the pictures that appear and can move. An animated film is one in which  puppets or drawings appear to move. Harrison and Hummell (2010, p. 20) define it as a quick display of a sequence of static images that create the illusion of motion. In simple words, animation is the manipulation of figures in which they appear as a moving pictures.

Advantages

1. Visualization of subject matter of better understanding

3. Interactive animation holds the audience's attention. The use of audio, graphics, and video interactive animation makes it interesting, engaging.

4. Animation adds fun to learning and motivates one to look for more information to learn.

Disadvantages

1. Animation requires a lot of effort and time to create. It works well from a technical perspective. But educators may find it difficult to place it in their curriculum.

2. Students may be distracted from the main content of learning. 

3. Animation technology uses more storage and memory space. It uses more bandwidth and requires high speed and uninterrupted internet connection

Microsoft Powerpoint is a common application software used for presentation. We can use this application to create and deliver the animated content as well.
